The modern Mexican peso is represented by the currency code MXN and the symbol $ (dollar sign).
In 1993, after months of hyperinflation and capital flight from Mexico, then president Carlos Salinas de Gortari introduced a new Mexican peso (Nuevo peso) by stripping three zeros off the currency. Thus, $1000 of old pesos became just $1 of the new currency.
Over the following three years, all new, re-valued currency replaced the old, resulting in the ‘Nuevo’ being dropped from the official name.
