Key information about New Zealand dollars
The New Zealand dollar (NZD) has been the official currency of the country since 1967 and is among the 10 most exchanged currencies in the world. Its symbol is the dollar sign ($).
Spending and tipping in New Zealand
As with other dollar systems, there are 100 cents to each dollar. Many items will be priced in cents as well as dollars, so keep a supply of 10, 20 and 50 cent coins to hand.
Tipping is not compulsory here, so don’t worry about leaving a percentage of your bill unless your service was truly exceptional.
New Zealand dollar denominations
New Zealand bank notes come in five different denominations:
- $5 (orange)
- $10 (blue)
- $20 (green)
- $50 (purple)
- $100 (red)
Each banknote features the image of a bird that is native to the country, as well as a notable New Zealander (or, in the case of the $20 note, Queen Elizabeth II).
The current denominations of coins in New Zealand are:
- 10 cents
- 20 cents
- 50 cents
